Quick advice

After a storm: the first five things to do

Keep people safe, limit interior damage, document what you can see and arrange a professional roof assessment without climbing up yourself.

KEY TAKEAWAY

Photograph visible damage from the ground, move valuables away from leaks and call for advice. Wet roofs, loose sheets and broken tiles are unsafe.

1. Keep everyone away from danger

Do not climb onto a wet roof or approach loose sheets, hanging gutters or damaged power connections. Keep children and pets clear of the affected area.

2. Limit damage inside

Move valuables away from leaks, place containers under drips and use towels only where it is safe. Avoid touching water near electrical fittings.

3. Photograph what you can see

Take wide and close photos from ground level. Record damaged rooms as well as visible roof, gutter or flashing damage for your roofer and insurer.

4. Call for professional advice

Describe the damage, your suburb and whether water is entering the home. This helps the roofer prioritise the next step and arrive prepared.

5. Keep temporary measures safe

Do not place a tarpaulin on the roof yourself. Temporary weatherproofing should be completed by someone with safe access equipment and roofing experience.
